I hope this finds you all safe and warm at home. I hate our 1st and 2nd grade musical "Hats!" was iced out tonight. Never fear, we have rescheduled it for Feb. 17 at 6:30. This is an event you will not want to miss!
I noticed many school districts have students attending online learning while out for bad weather. This is especially helpful for those districts in the north who miss a large number of school days. If we are out any more days consider having your child log on to Lexia Learning or Reflex to get some learning time in on those lazy days. If they need additional work, they can also log on the PBS Kids website and find lots of fun learning. Ask them, they use PBS Kids Island in class sometimes.
Be safe out there!

Take a minute to read this great article on two of our kindergarten teachers. Mr. Howse and Mrs. House demonstrate their cooking show with their students. There is even a video you can watch of the students making guacamole. Way to go Mr. Howse and Mrs. House!

Thank you to all of the families who came out last night for our parent night. I have heard many good things about your experiences. If you were unable to attend you can still get the helpful information teacher's gave out. They shared many ways you can help your child at home with reading, writing and math. Please contact your child's teacher to get more information!

Today our staff wore college shirts to support furthering education beyond high school. Ask your child what college shirt their teacher wore. We hope to instill a love of learning and the desire to continue their education beyond high school. It was great to look around our building and see a wide array of colleges represented.

Happy New Year! We had a great start back today! We call this our second first day of school. A chance to have a fresh start and approach the new year with a new attitude. Loved seeing all of the smiling faces this morning.
I wanted to share 7 great things you can do as you read with your child:
1. Read the Title, Author's Name and Illustrator's name (ask your child what the author and illustrator do, I bet they can tell you)
2. Ask your child to make predictions-what do they think the book is about or what might happen in the story.
3. Ask your child what is happening in the pictures-pictures can be powerful tools to those early readers, they begin to make connections between the words on the page and the picture
4. Ask questions-ask a question every few pages, these can be simple recall questions that have one answer or they can more reasoning type questions like "How do you think the child got to school?"
5. Reread these same books again...and again...and again!
6. Move your finger as you read-your child begins to see the left to right movement print takes on in a book or passage, it also helps them see one to one matching of words.
7. Really enjoy the book with your child!
Remember reading daily for 20 minutes will help your child's achievement grow at higher rates. This is if they are read to or if they read to you or read on their own at home. This is one of the very best ways to increase vocabulary, reading foundational skills and spend time with your child.
Enjoy!

Parents,
We are watching the weather closely. There is a strong chance of inclement weather on Friday. We will be working to dismiss 400 students and 45 staff members. Please help us dismiss everyone safely by following a few helpful tips:
1. Be aware of the weather and road conditions throughout the day by watching local TV, a weather app, grade level Facebook page
2. Stay close to your phone in case we send out a Parent Link message (do we have your most up to date phone number?)
3. Have a plan to have someone at home in case school is dismissed early
4. If your child is normally a car rider please be prepared to go through our car line as normal
5. If your child is normally a bus rider please realize we cannot pull them off buses once we have loaded
6. Please do not call the school to ask if we are dismissing, we need to keep phone lines open to receive pertinent calls, you will receive a Parent Link if school is dismissed
Thank you for your help and consideration!

Happy Monday! What an exciting week we had last week with our 2nd place finish in the Faulkner County Fair Parade and being named a "Beating the Odds" school by the Office of Educational Policy. We are so proud of all of our students, teachers, parents and community members who help make every day successful at TJ. I will share more about our success tomorrow night at our Open House, please make plans to attend.

I think we are all settled into this new year. A big thank you to you all for helping us get settled to our routines. I know it can be frustrating at first when the car line takes awhile or when we ask for your driver's license each time you visit, but thank you for your patience as we work to keep everyone safe.
I hope you are planning to attend our Open House on Sept. 24. This is a time to come learn about our school and how we performed on state tests last year. It is also a great time to come see what all your child has been doing in school so far this year. There is lots of neat work displayed around the building just waiting for you to come see. We hope you will come join us next week.
Thank you for an awesome start to school! We could not have such success without you!
